Authority comes into question especially when a new trend in theology diverges from the approved. One can claim authority for a 'new' theology by reinterpretation of an authoritative tradition; by miracle stories; by association of one's theological point of view with an authoritative person from the past; and by an appeal to the oldest stratum in the authoritative text or tradition.
